Post Gencon Report, UK Ronin?!?
Just wondering how the ladder went and what kind of Legacy decks you saw at Gencon, and what we should be newly worried about. So wish I'd been there!

I didn't go to the GC, but I heard Lawson played High House Kami attack, there is a decklist over on the dragon forums somewhere.

I am little bummed because I was going to rock Phoenix Kami, and I think it would have been a really fun game. Always next year, I suppose.

Steve Lawson did win with HHoL Kami wank, but not really because it was over powering or any thing. Chris Russell came in second with Crane honor dueling that is pretty fierce too. I came in third with a mix of 3 decks (TA, Crab, Dragon). Most people that signed up seemed more interested in just being able to play their old clan and cards, not developing the most efficient killer monster ever.

Overall we had a pretty good mix of decks, from Naga to TA (dueling and military), Crane dueling honor, Crab Walls, Goblin blitz and a couple of Kami based decks. Given that copy-copy is back I was a bit surprised not to see the multi-infinite decks back to play.

As far as I know all of the games were amicable with no real rules questions. This is pretty common in my experience with Legacy players.

I was having a discussion with some people about their Gencon experience and they all agreed that the event being a ladder really changed their experience and improved their enjoyment. It fit in more easily on a logistical level and it provided the format a bit more of the social contract that exists in local playgroups. An understanding that yes, you can build a super awesome destroy your opponent on turn 2 deck, but you would be a dick to play that in this event, because come on.

I still would like to see some structured regular tournaments for the format, but nice to know that people are willing to have their legacy decks tag along at an event.

I also got the feedback that people liked the Ladder format but wanted some better way to contact other players and arrange games. I am thinking maybe next year of having some kind of network for contacts (facebook, twitter etc), as most people do not want to make their phone numbers public on the internet (wisely).

Another improvement suggested was having a known time and location for people to meet each day if they wanted to play. There are a couple of good bars with large tables within easy walking distance, so we might try this too.

If you have any other suggestions I would be happy to hear them.

Cheers

I just want to thank you for carrying the banner of Legacy at Gencon. Was great to see and I'm glad it went well.
