The Race to the Throne
The Race for the Throne is the first-ever L5R "mega-game." You will determine the major shifts of the Empire - not through the CCG tournaments alone, but through many other means. These can include costuming, web-design, charity fund-raising, hosting large events, spreading the word of your Clan, etc. This game will begin with the Kotei season, and the whole Race for the Throne will lead to the Samurai Championships in 2008.

Object of the Game
Each Clan is trying to seize the throne and rule Rokugan. To do so, the Clans must achieve dominance in five Spheres of power: Military, Economy, Politics, Knowledge, and Spirit. During the course of the megagame, the clans accumulate points in each Sphere, and are ranked in the Sphere based on point totals compared to other clans. The Clan at the end with the best combined rankings (adding all five Spheres together for each Clan) will take the throne at the end of The Samurai Championships.

Participating Clans
Crab, Crane, Dragon, Lion, Mantis, Phoenix, Scorpion, Spider, and Unicorn.

The Prize of Power
At the end of the megagame, the Clan with the highest rankings in each Sphere will place a member to the following positions:

Military: Shogun
Economy: Imperial Treasurer
Politics: Imperial Chancellor
Knowledge: Imperial Advisor
Spirit: Voice of the Emperor
All Spheres Combined: Emperor

The Seven Legs
There will be seven legs of the race. At the end of each leg we will calculate to see who is leading in each category. There will be prizes for each leg's best Clan in the different Spheres.

It is important to win the legs because the top Clan in each Sphere of a given leg will receive a point bonus during the next leg in that Sphere.

If a Clan is dominant in at least three Spheres at the end of any given leg, they will put a Clan member up as the leading contender for the throne, giving them a large advantage over other Clans not currently in power. The actual Emperor will be decided at the Samurai Championships. If a Clan has the leading contender (3 Spheres or better) at the end of a leg they will gain an additional point bonus for all spheres during the next leg.

1st Leg Preseason: Kotei 2007, March - May
2nd Leg: June 1, 2007 - September 30, 2007
3rd Leg: October 1, 2007 - December 31, 2007
4th Leg: January 1, 2008 - March 31, 2008
5th Leg: April 1, 2008 - June 30, 2008
6th Leg: July 1, 2008 - Just before Samurai Championships
7th Leg: Samurai Championships

At the end of the Race, one Clan will provide the Empire with an Emperor, and one clan will be stripped of its status and its samurai will become ronin. The eliminated clan will remain a playable faction, and throughout Celestial Edition, will have unique options unavailable to other clans.

The clan which is eliminated will be determined by the clan which gains the Throne.

If the Crab gain the Throne, the lowest in Military is eliminated.
If the Crane gain the Throne, the lowest in Politics is eliminated.
If the Dragon gain the Throne, the lowest in Spirit is eliminated.
If the Lion gain the Throne, the lowest in all spheres is eliminated.
If the Mantis gain the Throne, the lowest in Economy is eliminated.
If the Phoenix gain the Throne, the lowest in Knowledge is eliminated.
If the Scorpion gain the Throne, the second-placed clan is eliminated.
If the Spider gain the Throne, the Crab Clan is eliminated.
If the Unicorn gain the Throne, the lowest in Military and Knowledge is eliminated.

Temptations
Any time a Clan either tops a specific Sphere two or more legs in a row or tops two or more Spheres in a single leg, members of the Imperial Assembly registered to that Clan will have a chance to accept or refuse a temptation by popular vote from those registered to that Clan. An example of such could be a box of boosters sent to all members of the Clan, or special promo cards which only registered members of that Clan will receive. Whatever form it takes, the price for accepting is always the same: the Clan will only receive half the points in its top-ranked Sphere during the next leg, and loses any additional bonuses in other Spheres for that leg.

Earning Points

Military
Your victories at CCG events translate to victory for your Clan on the field of battle in Rokugan.

Scheduled Major Events

These will be on the schedule on the AEG web site. These events include Kotei, Gencon Indy, European Championships, Jewel Championships, etc.

Sanctioned Samurai Fund Events
AEG will make a Samurai Fund Prize Kit and sanctioning available to T.O.'s starting in June 2007. No events will be sanctioned prior due to Kotei. Events must purchase the Samurai Fund Prize Kit and have a minimum of 50 participants for the event in order for it to count for points in the Race. Proceeds from the sale of the Samurai Fund Prize Kit go to the Samurai Fund. T.O.'s and players will be given the opportunity to host events that will allow the winner to qualify for a spot at the Samurai Championships. Details on how to organize these events to follow.

Economy
Your use of Koku will help your Clan dominate the markets and trade routes of Rokugan.

Scheduled Events
These will include: Koku Auctions, Largest Kotei, Best Samurai Fund Promotion, Store Makeover Contest, etc.

Koku Redemption
Points will be earned during each leg for koku sent and redeemed at the AEG offices. All koku sent to the AEG offices after January 1 can be pledged to a specific Clan. Points will be awarded to the Clan that sends in the largest total amount of koku and for the single largest koku purchase. Keep an eye on the AEG site for special Race for the Throne koku offers.

Politics
How you present yourself in words, attire, and character will sway the courts of Rokugan in your Clan's favor.

Scheduled Events
These will include: Winter Court, Secret Votes, Best Kotei Vote, L5R Attire Contests, Clan Courts, Fan Site Contests, etc.

Court Intrigue
Players will have the ability to earn regular points through RPG events and through long-term in-game loyalty to a specific Clan.

Knowledge
Your knowledge of the traditions, lore, and history of L5R will give your Clan control over secrets, spells, and other information in Rokugan.

Scheduled Events
These will include a L5R Scavenger Hunt, L5R Biggest Fan Contest, Fan Fiction Contest, Hidden questions on the web, etc.

Walking the Way
Points will be earned for each leg through regular trivia quizzes and Imperial Assembly contests.

Spirit
Your generosity and sportsmanship will win the hearts and minds of the people of Rokugan.

Scheduled Events
These will include Charity Events, Food Drives, Challenge Booths, and more.

Imperial Gift
Players and Clans will be able to gain points in the Spirit Sphere for food and charitable donations made in the name of their Clan and verified by the charity receiving the donation.

Gencon Indy, Gencon Australia, the European Championship and the South American Championship are each host to the Samurai Championship Tournament. While each location will have special events, multiple tournaments and activities, the first rounds of the Samurai Championship Tournament will be represented in the main event at each location. 32 players will move on to the finals to be held in Southern California in November of 2008.

The winning clan of this tournament will receive two prizes. First, the winning clan will be immune to elimination in the Race for the Throne; in the case that they would be eliminated, elimination would fall to the second most eligible clan. Secondly, the winning clan will take for its own the lands of the clan that is eliminated, serving as governors for the uninhabited lands.
In addition, the champion of the clan that wins the side event will win a duel to the first blood against the champion of the clan that places second.

Race to the Throne: This event will result in points given for the following contests. For every three wins a clan gets in each category, they will get one point in that sphere.
Military: Tournament Winner - The winning Clan at each event.

Spirit: T-shirt Dominance - Clan with the most Clan T-shirts on at each event.

Knowledge: Most Demos - Clan who gives the most demonstrations of L5R with non-L5R players in the store that day.

Politics: Best Decorated Store - The Clan that best helps decorate their store in all things their Clan.

Economy: Booster Draft Event - Stores will be able to run a booster draft event and winners will earn Economy points.

The greatest heroes of the Empire have gathered in the tournament grounds near the Plains of Thunder, assembled by the announcement of a grand Celestial Tournament by the Voices of the Sun and Moon. Dozens have assembled to compete, watched and supported by hundreds of their kinsmen, including the most important and powerful individuals anywhere in the Emerald Empire.

This has not gone unnoticed.

The forces of Heaven wish to re-establish a proper, reverent order in the world of man, but the forces of the Realm of Evil do not consider such an outcome acceptable. The forces of Jigoku have thrived for decades in the atmosphere of fear and ambition that mankind has wrought, and they have no intention of allowing that to stop.

The Clan that claims the most victories in this Global Storyline Tournament will be responsible for thwarting an attack by Jigoku on the Celestial Tournament, the pivotal event in determining the next Dynasty of the Emerald Empire. The cost of victory may be great indeed, but the clan will gain a favor from their new Emperor, and the blessings of the Voices of the Sun and Moon will be showered upon them as well.

The Empire is in turmoil in the face of disapproval from the Celestial Heavens. Mankind has lost his way, and presumed too much, meddling in affairs that are not for those without the spark of divinity within their soul. The precious few virtuous among them are to be rewarded, and the countless legions of the sinful are to be punished. There will be no mercy, for the wrath of the Heavens has been fully aroused.

Not all share this animosity, however.

From the murky depths of the Realm of Waiting, the god named Ryoshun watches with sadness. Alone among the sons and daughters of the original Lady Sun and Lord Moon, Ryoshun has no legacy in the mortal world, no descendants or followers to bear his name and celebrate his memory. For a thousand years he has watched the world of men without bias, without partiality, and he has seen the virtue that others have missed in their anger and bitterness.

Now the Guardian of the Spirit Realms has reached into the essence of each realm under his protection, and crafted a series of artifacts of incredible power, each the equal or better of the ancestral weapons held by the Great Clans. These incredible talismans of power will be gifted to those who demonstrate their worth, as a sign to the Heavens that the divine can inspire as well as censure.

The winner this tournament will determine the clan that receives the Talisman of Tengoku. The mark of the Celestial Heavens carries great weight, and none may attack its bearer whom he has not first attacked. The winner may choose what form the Talisman takes (a weapon, a suit of armor, an item of jewelry, or any other appropriate token that the winner prefers), and what non-experienced, non-unique Samurai-legal personality will be chosen to bear it.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth. Additional points in each of the other spheres will be awarded, 3 points for first place and 1 for second.

Years ago, a man named Kaneka traveled the Empire as a ronin, encountering many talented and gifted individuals, making allies and enemies everywhere he went. When the hand of fate intervened and granted Kaneka a life unlike that of any ronin-born samurai, when he rose in status and power to become the first Shogun of Rokugan for his brother, Emperor Toturi III, those who had known him best stood beside him as his chosen advisors. These men and women were placed above all others in the Shogun?s forces, and when many of the Great Clans showed their support of Kaneka, he in turn ordered his advisors to swear fealty to the clans as a sign of his favor. One by one, his advisors joined the ranks of the Great and Minor Clans.

All save one.

Etsushi is the last true descendant of the ronin hero Ihariko, who founded the Hidden Sword ronin band. The Forest Killer bandits destroyed the Hidden Sword years ago, leaving only Etsushi, his brother Uchito, and Kaneka alive to tell the tale. Now Kaneka is dead, Uchito has joined the Lion at the Shogun's request, and Etsushi alone remains. As a magistrate in Zakyo Toshi, the so-called City of Vice, Etsushi has had to face the machinations of the Scorpion again and again, and now he finally has accepted that as a ronin there is nothing he can do as a simple wave man. Fortunately, his talents, his courage, and his tenacity have not gone unnoticed, and a clan has approached him with the offer of fealty that he alone among the advisors missed originally.

What clan will Etsushi serve?
Will he join his brother among the Lion?
Will he accept that the Scorpion cannot be defeated, and join the Clan of Secrets?
That remains to be seen.

The winner of this tournament will see his clan offer fealty to the ronin hero Etsushi, the last of the legendary Shogun's Advisors. Etsushi will swear an oath of loyalty and serve the clan with every resource at his disposal, no matter the cost. Although there is no guarantee of a new personality card, if one should be printed, the winner will receive full credit for Etsushi's new representation in the game.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth. Additional points in each of the other spheres will be awarded, 3 points for first place and 1 for second.

The winner this tournament will determine the clan that receives the Talisman of Chikushudo. The favor of the Realm of Animals has strange but powerful results. The bearer of this talisman may command any natural creature, and see through its eyes as he wishes. The winner may choose what form the Talisman takes (a weapon, a suit of armor, an item of jewelry, or any other appropriate token that the winner prefers), and what non-experienced, non-unique Samurai-legal personality will be chosen to bear it.

Story Point: Scorpion playwright Bayushi Hiroshi will
become the Empress's favored courtier.
Fiction: Glory of the Empire, Part I

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth. Additional points in each of the other spheres will be awarded, 3 points for first place and 1 for second.

Each court season is an opportunity for those who travel in such circles to increase their influence and prestige and, for a very select few, to gain the attention and the favor of the Emperor himself. With a new Dynasty upon the throne, the new Emperor's first Winter Court will be the most momentous in living memory, and opportunities will abound for those who know how to seek them out.

The winner of this tournament will have the opportunity to create a new character in the Legend of the Five Rings storyline. This character will be in attendance at the new Emperor's Winter Court, although they may be a courtier, a yojimbo, an artisan, or any of a dozen other possible professions. This character will gain the attention of the Emperor through one means or another, perhaps creating a new work of art, demonstrating a mastery of kata, or skillful maneuvers in court. For at least a season, this new character will be the darling of the court, the favored of the Emperor himself, and will feature prominently in any fiction regarding the courts.

Story Point: Moto Kang will perform an act of villainy
and awaken the spirit of his blade.
Card: Moto Kang's Sword
Card: Moto Kang (Experienced)
Fiction: Darling of the Season

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth. Additional points in each of the other spheres will be awarded, 3 points for first place and 1 for second.

Every samurai carries a blade forged for his family. The eldest in each particular branch of a family carries his grandfather's blade, and in turn passes it down when he comes of age to do so. Every katana has a story, and is forged for service. Those who come into the hands of particularly valiant warriors can have their spirits awakened by honor and glory, and become things of magic, spirits wrapped in steel that strengthen the arm and honor of their master.

The winner of this tournament may select any one living, non-unique personality currently aligned with their faction. This personality will perform a deed of such heroism (or if the winner prefers, villainy!) that it will awaken the spirit of their blade, and it will become a talisman of great power for that character's family. This blade, and its bearer, will be specified in the next two arcs of the Legend of the Five Rings storyline, guaranteeing that the legend of this character and their bravery lives on.

Story Point: Kakita Kensho-in will bear the Obsidian Hand.
Fiction: Sun and Moon, Part IV
Card: Hand of the Obsidian Dragon
Card: Kakita Kensho-in (Experienced)

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth the points listed in the results.

The Heavens are in turmoil.
For too long, the rightful and divine entities of the Celestial Heavens have tolerated the interlopers who walk among them. Although the spirits of past Emperors and those human souls elevated to the status of Fortunes are welcome among them, too many former mortals have overstepped their boundaries and made their home in the Celestial Heavens. Tengoku is the seat of gods, dragons, and Fortunes, and without the acceptance of their betters, mankind has no place there.

This insult will be borne no longer.

The Jade and Obsidian dragons, unique creatures born of destiny and possessing an unprecedented power shared between two realms, have ascended to the Heavens and challenged Hitomi and Yakamo. The rightful will be restored. The truly divine will reign in the Heavens once more, or the current will prove they are truly the divine. And yet, even if the Obsidian and Jade dragons should succeed, the judgment of the Heavens will not yet be finished with mankind.

There will be a reckoning.

This is only the beginning.

Just as the Sun chooses a hero to receive its blessings, so too does the victorious Moon seek those worth of its favor. Although it too seeks a recipient who demonstrates the proper respect for the Celestial Order, the Moon has no little use for conventional heroes, and instead seeks one who can walk the fine line between reverence for the Order and the wicked ways over which the Moon hold sway.

The winner of this tournament will select from a list one personality of his faction who shall be chosen by the Moon to bear the new Obsidian Hand. The dark powers commanded by this artifact will elevate its bearer to new levels of influence throughout the seedy underbelly of Rokugan.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth.

The tumult in the Celestial Heavens is completely unprecedented in Rokugan, for never have the divine entities of Tengoku risen up and demanded that the delicate balance, established at the beginning of time and changed only in recent years by the actions of man, be restored to its previous state. Now, two dragons battle against the mortal interlopers Yakamo and Hitomi, determined to expunge the stain of mankind from the Heavens' highest ranks. Whatever the outcome, the shugenja and monks of Rokugan know that they must pay proper deference and respect to the victors, for to do otherwise could spell ruination for all they hold dear.

The winner of this tournament will have a temple erected to the victorious entity not previously selected at the South American Championships, either the Sun or the Moon, within his clan's lands. Either the Temple of the Victorious Sun or the Temple of the Victorious Moon will be the first of its kind, and will become the primary site of worship for the entity in question throughout the Empire.

This is only the beginning.

Lady Moon, ever an enigmatic and wrathful entity, has been challenged for her position atop the Celestial Order by the Obsidian Dragon, a truly divine entity. Only one can hold the position of Moon, however, and the struggle between the two will leave one the victor, and one the defeated. The defeated will fall to earth, shattered and broken, and be discovered there in their last moments by a single mortal, who shall hear secrets unlike any ever heard by mortals, and receive a final blessing.

The winner of this tournament may select any one living personality currently aligned to his faction. This individual will be present at the side of the defeated as they breathe their final breath, and learn the secrets they have to impart before they passes on, as well as receiving their final blessing.

Story Point: Shinjo Hanari will found a new monk sect.
Fiction: Letters and Bios
Fiction: Scenes from the Empire VI

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth. Additional points in each of the other spheres will be awarded, 3 points for first place and 1 for second.

The wish of every honorable samurai is to perish in the service of his lord. For many, however, that end never arrives, and instead they seek honorable retirement within the ranks of the Brotherhood of Shinsei, venerable scholars and seekers of enlightenment. When a samurai enters the monastery, he surrenders his name and all his worldly trappings, taking on a new name both to symbolize his new purpose in life, and to avoid bringing dishonor to his family through what may be a life of inactivity. Some, however, find greater destiny in their new life than ever reached in their old.

The winner of this tournament may select any Clan War era personality affiliated with his clan. Spider Clan players may pick Shadowlands personalities, with story team approval, who will found a dark monk family. This personality must not be one known to have been killed. Instead, this personality will be featured in a new fiction, and be revealed to be the founder and head of a new sect of the Brotherhood of Shinsei. This sect will be designed with the assistance of the winner, and be based on the personality of the selected samurai. Cards referencing this sect may appear in future expansions, and the sect will receive a Basic School in the role-playing game as well as a full write-up on its background.

Fiction: A New Empire, Part II

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth. Additional points in each of the other spheres will be awarded, 3 points for first place and 1 for second.

The Jeweled Champions of the Empire, Emerald, Jade, Amethyst, Ruby, and Topaz, are among the most well-known and influential samurai in all of Rokugan. Each commands considerable, if different, resources, and each can draw upon the assistance of any number of individuals affiliated with the Imperial bureaucracy, as well as with the Great and Minor Clans. The only complication is that, with such a diverse staff at their disposal, the results can sometimes be uneven, and this can negatively impact aspects of the Champions' duties.

The most powerful of the lot, the Emerald and Jade Champions, have decided that this is unacceptable. Together, the two have sought out and recruited a single blacksmith, one of the most talented in all the Empire, to oversee the work of those who produce the weapons and armor that these men give their subordinates, both as a badge of their office and to enact their duties. This individual shall be perhaps the most powerful and influential blacksmith in the Empire, and shall be responsible for overseeing the creation of weapons carried by the Imperial Legions, the Jade Legion, the bodyguards of the Amethyst Champion, and more.

The winner of this tournament will determine choose the family of his faction from which this blacksmith will come, and may select a name to give this personality. This individual will appear in the storyline of the Legend of the Five Rings, and may also receive a personality card at some point in the future.

Story Point: Matsu Benika will wield the new Jade Hand.
Fiction: Sun and Moon, Part II
Card: Hand of the Jade Dragon
Card: Matsu Benika (Experienced 2)

Even as the Heavens pass judgment on the folly of man, the victorious Sun gazes down and finds that there are those among the wicked and the disobedient who are truly faithful. From among these few, from the ranks of those who revere the Celestial Order and the Mandates of Heaven, the victorious Sun shall choose one to bear its blessing: the new Jade Hand.

The winner of this tournament will select from the below list one personality of his faction who shall be selected by the Sun to bear the new Jade Hand. Powerful almost beyond comprehension, the Jade Hand will prove to be an incredible asset for the clan whose hero carries it onto the field of battle.

The Empire of Rokugan is rife with tales of heroes. Over the past century, so many world-changing events have taken place that some stories have been lost in the clamor. Now, one of those forgotten tales has been recovered. The winner of this tournament may select any one Clan War era personality from their faction. That personality will be featured in a fiction detailing a previously untold story of their exploits.

Note: This event was in the booster draft format.

The samurai of Rokugan are a hot-tempered lot, and when a dispute between two cannot be resolved in any other fashion, a duel is the formal means to settle such matters with absolute finality. The final match of this tournament will allow each finalist to select any one non-experienced, non-unique living personality currently aligned to their faction. The two personalities will duel, and the winning deck will determine the winning personality. After the final match is concluded, the winner may decide if the duel was to first blood or to the death.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth.

Like his friend and mentor Seppun Kiharu, the Miya family daimyo Miya Shoin has come to see the value in creating closer bonds between the Imperial families and the Great Clans, if only to undo some of the damage done by the Lady Otomo Hoketuhime prior to her death. In an attempt to create such a bond, Shoin has chosen to invite a worthy samurai from the Great Clans to serve as his chief yojimbo, in hopes that doing so will build not only an understanding, but friendship between the Emperor's heralds and the men and women who serve in his clans.

The winner of this tournament may select any one non-experienced, non-unique, tournament legal personality from their faction. This individual will be invited and accept the invitation to become the chief yojimbo for Miya Shoin, the Imperial Herald. Clan Champions and family daimyo are not eligible to be selected. They have too much do to!

The Jade Magistrates are the eyes and ears of Kuni Daigo, the feared and respected Jade Champion of Rokugan. At his command, they travel the Empire in search of any who might have violated the Emperor's laws regarding proper use of magic, and investigate whispered rumors of forbidden arts, such as the dreaded blood sorcery, maho. The winner of this tournament may select any one non-experienced shugenja currently aligned to his faction. That personality will receive an appointment to serve with the Jade Magistrates, and will be a trusted vassal of Kuni Daigo himself.

Once every few centuries, a piece of artwork is created that has such beauty, such relevance, that it becomes the talk of the entire Empire and enters its creator into the annals of history. Many of the early works of the Crane Clan's founders fall into this category, as does the recently, tragically destroyed jade statue known as The Council. The winner of this tournament will have one member of his clan create an object of such beauty that it will capture the Empire's attention and permanently place his name on the lips of those who speak of the arts throughout the history of Rokugan.

The winner of this tournament will be able to supply AEG with a photograph of anything. It can be a portrait of a person, a landscape, a building, or anything else that he just happens to like very much. This picture will be given to one of our artists and be used to create the art for a card in coming set. If the winner sends a picture of himself, that picture will be used for a personality card. If a landscape is sent it, it might become a Region or Holding. A building might become a Holding or even a Stronghold. Whatever the subject matter, it will become a permanent part of L5R in whatever manner the winner prefers.

The winner of this tournament will have a chance to create a new legend in Rokugan's history. A member of the winning clan will discover the tale of a lost Minor Clan, born and destroyed sometime in the distant past of Rokugan, never to return.

The winning player will be able to work with the story team to create the name, flavor, and theme of the lost Minor Clan, and while the clan will not appear in the CCG (which is to say that they will not recieve personalities, but there will be cards revealing the clan's existence, complete with the winner's name in an attribution), it will receive full treatment in the RPG.

Lord Sun has been challenged for his position by the Jade Dragon, and one shall be cast down from the sky by the victor of this titanic struggle. One fights for the right of the conqueror, the other for celestial balance. Even as the power of the defeated fades, one shall fall to earth and shatter the mountains. Broken and dying, their divinity will dissipate even as mortality rushes in for their last moments. Regardless of who falls, however, the defeated entity will have knowledge beyond the ken of mortals, and knows secrets that can scarcely be contained by the mortal mind. Those who find the fallen in their final moments shall hear these secrets, and be the recipient of a final blessing.

The winner of this tournament may select any one living personality currently aligned to his faction. This individual shall be at the side of the defeated as he dies, and shall be privy to secrets never before heard by mortal ears as the former celestial entity utters his final words.

Otomo Hoketuhime, Lady of the Otomo and the unquestioned, ultimate authority of the assembled Imperial families, is dead, murdered by an assassin even as she resumed power over the Imperial Court in the city of Toshi Ranbo. Months before her death, Hoketuhime had taken as her yojimbo Hiruma Todori, daimyo of the Hiruma family and one of the students of the lost Hiruma techniques. Many among the Imperial families had hoped perhaps that this would be an opportunity to establish a closer bond between them and the Great Clans, but sadly that was not to be; Todori's resentment over being compelled to serve was clear, and Hoketuhime took no steps to conceal her enjoyment over his consternation.

Now, in the wake of her death, the Imperials realize more than ever that they must build bridges with the Great Clans if they are to have any hope of surviving. Seppun Kiharu, the aged daimyo of the Seppun family and the master of the Brotherhood of Shinsei's Order of Ten Thousand Temples, now seeks a yojimbo among the ranks of the Great Clans. Unlike Hoketuhime, however, Kiharu seeks someone with whom he can establish a rapport, perhaps even friendship, and to whom he can pass on some measure of his wisdom before his impending retirement. If he is successful, he reasons, then perhaps he can ensure that his family will continue to prosper even if a new dynasty takes the throne in the coming months.

The winner of this tournament may select any one currently legal, non-experienced personality to receive the invitation to serve as the chief yojimbo for Seppun Kiharu. Clan Champions are not eligible to be selected. Family daimyo will be considered if the winner requests it, but may be declined.

The Fortunes are fickle, mysterious creatures.

Every year, the Fortune of Enigmas, Muzaka, takes human form and walks among the people of Rokugan, never revealing his presence until he finds the one person he seeks. When he finally selects the one person that he wishes to speak to, Muzaka challenges them to a friendly game of riddles, or perhaps a puzzle. The nature of the contest varies every year, but it is always some manner of enigma. If the individuals declines, the Fortune moves on to find another, and the subject never realizes that he has had a brush with divinity. Few refuse, however, for something about Muzaka compels others to participate in his games, no matter how dire the circumstances otherwise. For those who defeat the Fortune in a simple game, the truth is revealed, and Muzaka offers a prize to the victor: a chance to glimpse events that have not yet taken place.

Sometimes the vision is of great things yet to come, and the responsibility for ensuring that this comes to pass falls upon the winner of the duel.

Sometimes the vision is of terrible things that will befall a family, or a clan, or the entire Empire, and the only one who can prevent these things is the winner.

The vision is a burden, and has destroyed more than one winner in the centuries since Muzaka began his strange games. What the ultimate purpose is, none can say, but the simple fact of the matter is that no one who encounters the Fortune is ever the same again.

The winner of this tournament may select any one living, non-unique personality currently affiliated with his faction. That character will be challenged to a duel of games by Muzaka, the Fortune of Enigmas. The winner may choose whether the personality sees a vision of great things to come, or of impending disaster. Either way, it will be the duty of that personality to try and steer the course toward or away from the events of the vision.

Any Clan dominating two Spheres of Influence at the end of a leg will be offered a Temptation. If they take the Temptation, they will have their highest Sphere in the next leg cut in half.

Temptations:
Scorpion: The Scorpion are known as the Clan of Secrets, and for good reason. There are few in the Empire who can rival their ability to ferret out knowledge and conceal it from others, when it suits their purposes. Throughout history, however, there has been one group that has managed not only to conceal themselves almost completely from the Scorpion’s prying eyes, but to gather secrets from the Clan of Secrets without being noticed. For centuries this group has made mockery of what the Scorpion stand for, always slipping under the radar of the supposed "Clan of Secrets."

Until now.

If this Temptation is accepted, the Scorpion Clan will discover the location of the Hidden Fortress, the secret lair of the Kolat Masters, and lay waste to it. In the process of doing so, they will seize the most valuable treasure that the Kolat have ever possessed, the ancient crystal known as the Oni’s Eye, and make careful use of it to advance their own agendas.

If the Temptation is accepted, Scorpion players will receive an exclusive Scorpion-only item, The Oni's Eye. This will be legal for both Samurai Edition and the next upcoming format.
Story Point: The Scorpion will destroy the Hidden Fortress.
Fiction: War Amid the Shadows
Lion: There can be no question that, in the wake of their victory over the Unicorn, the Lion are the pre-eminent military force in the Empire, and some say the world. Thus far, in the history of Rokugan, there has been nothing to suggest that this claim can be refuted. In the modern age, however, there is greater contact with the world beyond the Empire than ever before, and even the traditionally xenophobic Lion have begun to hear rumors of other cultures and their powerful armies.

If this Temptation is accepted, then among the items recovered from the Unicorn lands will be discovered an exhaustive and detailed treatise on the unit structure and military tactics of what many believe to be the most powerful military in the known world: the Yodotai. With this information in hand, the Lion Clan alone may be the only force in the world that can rival the power of the Yodotai centurion legions.

If the Temptation is accepted, Lion players will receive an exclusive Lion-only item, which represents the tactics learned. This will be legal for both Samurai Edition and the next upcoming format.
Story Point: The Lion will discover a Yodotai military treatise.
Fiction: The Heaven's Will, Part I
Mantis: Despite their formal status as a Great Clan, the Mantis have suffered quietly for years as their enemies and detractors use their Minor Clan origins against them, even if they do so quietly to avoid calling into question an Imperial decree. Along among the Great Clans, the Mantis were not founded by a child of the Sun and Moon, and their representation in the Celestial Courts of Tengoku is ever called into question. The Mantis are a valiant and courageous people, however, and have earned the favor of the mighty Thunder Dragon, who has the ability to at last end this unfortunate state of being.

If this Temptation is accepted, the celestial Thunder Dragon will use a fraction of its power to reward the Mantis for their courage and valor, and suffuse the spirit of Yoritomo, an attendant in the Celestial Court, with its essence. Yoritomo will become a Kami in all but birth, and the heavenly patronage of the Mantis Clan will be without question throughout the Heavens and the Empire, for eternity.

If the Temptation is accepted, Mantis players will receive an exclusive Mantis-only item, a Shrine to the Yoritomo Kami. This will be legal for both Samurai Edition and the next upcoming format
Story Point: Yoritomo will become a Kami in all but birth.

The Empire of Rokugan is a land filled with stories. The men and women who dwell there entertain one another, and their children, with stories of heroes long since passed on. It is not only a means of entertainment, but a demonstration of respect and reverence for one's ancestors. It is as much a part of life as breathing or eating. Some tales have become so common, so well-known, that they are the stuff of legend. Heroes from the dawn of the Empire, or the Clan War, are known to virtually everyone in the Empire. Others are less well-known. And other still have yet to be told.

Now is the time for a new tale.

The winner of this tournament will have the opportunity participate in designing a new personality in an upcoming expansion for the L5R CCG. The winner will be able to choose the name of the new character, write an art description, choose one profession for the character (courtier, samurai, or shugenja), and select a flavor trait for them if they wish (such as "Master of Pain" or "Fist of the Khan," to use two previous examples of a flavor trait). Some restrictions will be imposed upon family/occupation combinations. For instance, there are very few Hida courtiers and no Hida shugenja.

At the head of the dark lord Daigotsu's sinister Spider Clan armies stands a single figure: the Obsidian Champion. Ruthless beyond all comprehension and completely devoid of mercy or compassion, the Obsidian Champion is the ultimate fulfillment of the true Spider philosophy: rule of the strong by domination of the weak. The current Champion, Daigotsu Hotako, formerly known as Yoritomo Hotako, has proven time and time again that the position is hers by strength of arms. Of the many who have challenged her for the position, none have survived. The only man who might possess the skill necessary to unseat Hotako sits at her right hand, utterly loyal to her. He is Daigotsu Fumiaki, the Chief Shireikan of the Spider armies.

But who shall sit at the Obsidian Champion's left hand?

Daigotsu has commanded that military domination is not sufficient for the Spider's ultimate plan to succeed. If victory is truly to be theirs, then the Spider must not only hold the Empire, but transform it as well. Toward that end, the Obsidian Champion has commanded all who seek to serve her as chief shugenja to participate in a grand tournament. The victor shall be responsible not only for the corruption of the Empire, but for converting the weak-willed fools of Rokugan to the worship of the Dark Kami, Fu Leng. This individual, this Onyx Champion, shall be the mouthpiece of a god in a hostile Empire, a voice of reason that leads the sheep of Rokugan to the true light of Fu Leng's grace.

The winner of this tournament may select any one living, non-experienced personality of their faction who is no longer legal in the current environment. Champions and family daimyo are not eligible to be selected for this prize. The chosen individual will be revealed to have converted to the Spider Clan, and will rise to the position of Onyx Champion, serving the Obsidian Champion and the dark lord Daigotsu as one of the Spider Clan's most powerful individuals.

Winning this tournament with a pure deck will not have an impact on the result. Regardless of the status of your deck, by winning with your chosen faction you are condemning a member of that clan to service among the Lost.

Choose carefully.

Story Point: Hidekazu will become a Unicorn Clan Samurai.
Fiction: Into the Mountains
Card: Moto Chiang (Experienced Hidekazu)

Race for the Throne:
Unicorn will receive 4 military points.
Lion will receive 1 military point,
3 spirit points, 3 knowledge points and
3 politics points.
Mantis will receive 2 military points.
Crane will receive 1 military point.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth. Additional points in each of the other spheres will be awarded, 3 points for first place and 1 for second.

Somewhere in the Empire, a madman sits in the darkness and laughs. His name is Hidekazu, or perhaps it is not. He is not certain, nor does he care. Hidekazu professes to be a disciple of P'an Ku, although no one can say for certain if that is true because no one knows exactly what P'an Ku is. Some believe it was a ruse used by Fu Leng during his first war against the Empire. Others believe it was a dragon that unmade itself rather than fall to corruption. There are as many myths as there are men who care to spin stories of the creature and its fate, whatever that may be. Most dismiss Hidekazu as a fool and a madman. Others agree that he is a madman, but not a fool, and they wisely keep away.

Divine or insane, Hidekazu has abilities that no one can comprehend. In the name of his possibly dead god, he will infiltrate the ranks of a Great Clan and spread his particular brand of insanity.

The winner of this tournament may choose to have Hidekazu become a member of his clan, replacing a low level member of the clan and hiding himself among their ranks. The winner may also choose what manner of role the madman will play within the clan, and gain an additional point for the Race for the Throne in the process. If Hidekazu is a samurai, the clan gains one additional Military point. If he is a courtier, they gain a Political point. Monk gains a Spirit point, merchant an Economic point, and Shugenja a Knowledge point. Hidekazu will receive an experienced personality aligned to the winner's clan that will have the keyword in question.

However, the winner may instead choose to have Hidekaze join the ranks of a different clan. If this happens, he may still choose what type of personality Hidekazu will be, and the clan that he joins will lose one point in that Sphere. Hidekazu will still receive an experienced version that will be aligned to the clan of the winner's choice.

What effect will Hidekazu have on the ranks of the clan he joins?

No one knows.

Yet.

But we will find out on during the summer solstice in the Bay of Green Coral.

Temptations:
Lion: For years before the onset of the Clan War, the Ancestral Blade of the Lion Clan was kept within the Imperial Palace in Otosan Uchi. After the fall of the Hantei Dynasty, it was eventually gathered together with the other ancestral blades and scattered across the sky by the wrathful Lady Shinjo, who believed that the Great Clans had disgraced their founders and the first Emperor. Since that time the Lion have made great use of other blades, including the Celestial Sword of the Lion, forged by the Fortune of Steel, and the blades Chukandomo and Daitan, powerful blades in their own right. None, however, has truly equaled the power of the Ancestral Blade of the Lion Clan.

If this Temptation is accepted, then one among those who dwell within the Celestial Heavens shall recognize the valor and honor of the Lion Clan, and return their blade to them. It will be borne by a powerful messenger chosen by the Heavens, one who shall stand shoulder to shoulder with the Lion, and strengthen their ranks in the process. Lion Clan players in the Imperial Assembly will receive a new personality card of this messenger, as well as their returned Sword.
Story Point: The Celestial Heavens will not return the Ancestral Sword of the Lion.
Spider: Daigotsu's master deception, creating the Spider Clan from the ranks of the Lost, is an unprecedented success. Although there are those who suspect, thus far none can prove any relation between the two groups. By the time the Empire realizes what the true scope of the Spider's threat is, it will be too late. The final stage of the plan is known only to Daigotsu, but already his preparations cause whispers among his followers, whispers of a deathblow dealt to an already flagging Empire. And the final stage, the step necessary to bring the Spider's plan to its most gruesome fruition, is the acceptance of others.

If this Temptation is accepted, one Great Clan will accept the Spider and recognize them before the Empire as a fellow Great Clan. They will present a blade, forged by Rokugan's greatest smiths, to serve as an ancestral blade for the Spider, and one among their number shall be accepted as a high-ranking member of the Spider Clan.

If the Temptation is accepted, the Spider players will receive a personality card of the character that joins them, as well as their new blade. The Clan that chooses to recognize the Spider will be the non-Spider Clan with the lowest Knowledge score in Leg 5. Ties will be broken by lowest Spirit score.
Story Point: The Unicorn will recognize the Spider Clan and they will receive an ancestral sword.
Fiction: The Heaven's Will, Part I II

As winter's last breath fades in the face of spring, the Great Clans look at one another with unabashed hostility. The Winter Court of 1169 taught the samurai of Rokugan but one thing: no man can be selected to sit up on the throne. If there is to be an Emperor, the throne must be taken. With even long-standing alliances strained by the events of the winter, the Great Clans now seek to consolidate their power base, as each takes steps to ensure that their vision of the next dynasty comes to pass, rather than that of their enemies. Resources previously considered unimportant now command the attention of multiple Clans, and the scramble for power has begun in earnest.

On the horizon, the coming storm continues to grow stronger.

During the 2008 Kotei season, the Great Clans are attempting to seize as much power and resources as they can in hopes of placing the next Emperor on the throne. Toward that end, they are taking control of previously unaligned holdings, each one adding something new to their array of resources to be used against their enemies. For each victory during the season, the winner will select one holding or event for their Clan.

The following holdings or resources are available to be chosen beginning with the first Kotei tournament of 2008. At the season's half-way point, additional items will be added to the list for each sphere, ensuring that the prizes for the latter half of the season will have the same allure as those during the first weeks.
